55th Street Station: Center for Urban Living

In the Morningside area of the Upper East Side sits a very unique pocket of economic activity. It comes in the form of the 55th Street Station. There are eight seven tenants in this “Center for Urban Living” with ample parking to match:

  1. Soyka Restaurant & Bar
  2. Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza
  3. Sushi Siam Japanese and Thai Restaurant
  4. Gelato Station (Moved)
  5. The Urban Collective
  6. National City Mortgage
  7. Idol’s Gym
  8. Kubik Sales Center

Sokya is critically acclaimed. Sushi Siam is known to have among the finest Thai food in the city. Andiamo is considered by many to be the best pizza in town. The Kubik project is planned adjacent to the Station and will add a sense of urbanism to the nook.

In the evenings, especially on the weekends, the area around 55th Street Station is packed to the brim. Were it not for the Station, the area would lack nighttime activity. A staple for Bay Point, Morningside, and Miami Shores residents, the 55th street Station is often overlooked by people not familiar with the area.

If you think that the Upper East Side isn’t lively at night, check this little hub out. You’re not likely to be disappointed.

Do we know anything about the likelihood of Kubik actually being built? I am not a naysayer convinced evrything just stopped because of the market, but I want to be realistic too. Is there any activity at the site?

  2. The site is not seeing construction, but most reports indicate that the legal haggling between residents and the developer has subsided in favor of a compromise. Kubik’s location is money. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t go through.

When I was there a few days ago, it looked like the Gelato Station was closed and moving to Lauderdale.

  4. I wrote an article a few weeks ago about Frankie’s merging with Andiamo – Frank and his wife Priscilla are waiting to add their famous sandwiches to the Pizza menu.

I think Soyka has done a great job with the whole area – he is definitely a visionary.

  5. Michael you’re right about that. Thanx for the correction.

Ines I read that article. I’m looking forward to the grub. Soyka’s vision has paid off for the entire area.

THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT PR! 55TH ST STA STARTS @ NE 54TH ST TO NE 57TH STREET & WE HAVE 14 TENANTS, WITH 3 MORE COMING THIS FALL: COURTYARD CAFE – BAR – LOUNGE + MILLE FLEURS + A CONSIGN OF THE TIMES LIKE STORE, BY MARK SOYKA’S WIFE, GABY. ONCE THE COURTYARD OPERATION IS OPEN, WHICH WIL BE OWNED AND OPERATED BY US, 55TH ST STA WILL HAVE COME TO FULL MATURITY…8 YEARS AFTER SOYKA ORIGINALY OPENED IT’S DOORS.

AS FOR KUBIK, THERE IS STILL HOPE, BUT THEY CONTINUE TO BE LEGALLY CHALLENGED BY 2 AREA RESIDENTS!! A REAL INJUSTICE, IF THERE EVER WERE ONE. BUT I HAVE HOPE THAT IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO, KUBIK WILL BREAK GROUND AND WILL BECOME A REALITY, WITH PEOPLE LIVING @ THE STATION….THE MOST UNIQUE COMMERICAL & RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX IN THE COUNTRY!

    THANKS AGAIN!

  7. It’s unfortunate to hear that there are still residents with gripes regarding this great development. But what is great to one might be terrible to another.

    Thanks for the info Ryan!

ACTUALLY, IT HAS LESS TO DO WITH “GREAT” OR NOT AND MORE TO DO WITH “CONTROL” “$$$’s” AND A GUY WHO HAS WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS AND NEEDS SOMETHING TO CRUSADE AGAINIST: NO GROWTH, PERIOD! FORGETTING THAT THEY TOO WERE ONCE TRANSPLANTS. MORNINGSIDE WAS PROTECTED AND DESIGNATED HISTORICAL, NOW SOME WISH TO CONTROL EVERYTHING AROUND MORNINGSIDE!

BUT, KUBIK AND WE BELIEVE THAT, IN THE END, THEY WILL PREVAIL! STAY TUNED.

THANK YOU AND OUR PATRONS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!

After parking in front of a “Sushi Siam” sign in your lots and ASKING inside if this was o.k. to park there, my car was towed away while I was enjoying my meal. The “safety patrol” watched me park, enter the restaurant then phoned in the tow. I know that this lot is crowded and tough to control, but is this a way to treat your customers? I am very very suspiscious of a little scam going on here with the towing company but in any case, your parking spots are not well marked and to tow away a customers car during their meal with no warning is shameful. I live on Belle Meade Island. I will NEVER again come to Soyla’s. Sushi Siam’s, or any other of your patrons. Neither will any of the friends I have.
