Miami’s Construction Boom and Mount Everest

Miami’s new construction boom is the first “big one” of the 21st Century for the United States. Both New York and Chicago witnessed major booms in vertical construction at the turn of the 19th century going into the 20th century. Since then, both northern cities have become world class. But, are they to be the last of America’s great skyscraper boomtowns or is history going to throw a tropical twist in the plot?

On paper, Miami’s 21st Century boom is massive. Consider this: if you sum up (stack) all of the buildings that have been built since the year 2000 along with those that are currently under construction and/or proposed, then you will find that Miami’s boom is truly awesome in scale.

The sum of height for all buildings built, under construction, and/or proposed in Miami since the year 2000 is a whopping 81,040 feet or over 15 miles high; almost three times the height of Mount Everest (29,035ft.)

It’s kinda scary when you think about it; almost mind-boggling. Even in consideration of those projects that are highly speculative, there is so much construction activity that the boom will have a profound effect on the future of Miami regardless. The construction activity is confined, mostly, to three adjacent urban neighborhoods (CBD, Brickell Village, and Uptown), and two ocean front communities (Miami Beach and Sunny Isles). The result will mean densification in the urban areas and impressively vertical ampleness in the ocean front areas where architecture preservation and height restrictions are prevalent.

What’s happening in the Greater Miami area is not only an urban development anomaly but a capitalistic and engineering marvel. It is as much a man-made phenomenon as it is a reflection of a social experiment. If you look at the Miami skyline today, you will see dozens of cranes and numerous freshly painted towers. Rarely in history can one witness a major city actively shedding its old facade while rapidly evolving into a blindingly bright future (i.e.: Shanghai, Dubai). This year, and the next 3 – 5 years, marks the threshold of this historic urban transformation for Miami.

Note: There are some buildings that have stalled and have their plans, permits, and plots for sale (i.e.: Onyx2, Miami Flatiron, Soleil, and Lynx). Some are inactive but not yet extinct (i.e.: Sky Residences). Island Gardens was not included in the list. There may be some height discrepancies (building height sources vary). This list is not definitive.
