The Miami-Dade Housing Agency has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Agency. The lawsuit cites HUD’s attempts to circumvent their own policies to improperly assume control of the local housing authority, as well as there being an insufficient amount of time being allowed for the Miami-Dade housing Agency to correct internal issues. HUD is forcing the County “to answer on charges of financial mismanagement of its public-housing and rental-assistance programs.”
This all follows numerous scandals where developers received public funds for affordable housing that never materialized.
“Citing a HUD handbook, it said takeovers should be considered only for ‘severe, pervasive and systemic’ problems in which the local government ‘resists problem-solving efforts’ and alternatives `have been exhausted or determined inappropriate because of the urgent need to take immediate action.’”
For now,the Miami-Dade Housing Agency is taking the fight to HUD.
